The Examined Heart: Radical Introspection

A practice of fearless self-inquiry into the layers of anger and grief, asking what wound, unmet need, or betrayal of self each emotion protects.

Why It Matters

Mirabai lived a life of relentless self-examination, refusing to accept the roles imposed on her. The examined heart is not a state of perfection but a commitment to look directly at what moves in us—especially the uncomfortable, the contradictory, the shameful. When rage surfaces, the examined heart asks: What am I not accepting? What boundary has been crossed? What version of myself am I defending? Grief often carries rage because we grieve not only what we've lost but who we might have become if things had been different. By examining the heart with honesty—Mirabai's own practice—we begin to see the architecture of our anger: its justified roots, its protective functions, and the unmet needs it signals. This is not therapy but spiritual honesty. It requires courage and a willingness to sit with discomfort until it speaks.
