The Examined Heart in Loss

Helping children develop emotional literacy by exploring what their grief reveals about their values, relationships, and inner landscape.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai devoted herself to examining her own heart—questioning desire, attachment, authenticity, and the nature of love. When children grieve, they too are being called to examine their hearts, whether they realize it or not. This concept invites young people into gentle self-inquiry: What did this person or relationship mean to me? What parts of myself did I discover through them? What values did they represent? Rather than encouraging children to 'move on' quickly, the examined heart practice supports them in becoming conscious of their inner world through loss. This might look like journaling prompts, talking circles, or creative projects where children explore their grief. By examining rather than suppressing, children develop emotional maturity and self-knowledge. They learn that grief is a teacher, revealing what matters most to them. This practice honors both the depth of their loss and their growing capacity for understanding themselves.
