The Examined Heart in Collective Loss

A practice of radical introspection into what a public figure's death reveals about our own values, longings, and unfinished work.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's bhakti was inseparable from self-examination—her songs constantly ask: Who am I in relation to what I love? What does my devotion reveal about my heart? In collective grief, this examined heart becomes a tool for understanding why a particular death undoes us. When a public figure dies, our grief often contains layers: sorrow for them, fear about the future, recognition of their unfulfilled dreams, and awareness of our own complicity or passivity. By examining our hearts, we can distinguish authentic grief from performative sadness. This practice asks: What wound does this loss touch in me? What values did this person embody that I claim but haven't fully lived? What are they calling me to do before I die? The examined heart transforms mourning from collective catharsis into individual moral reckoning, making grief generative and purposeful.
