The Examined Heart

The contemplative practice of regularly investigating your own emotional truth, motivations, and hidden patterns in love.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotional poetry reveals a saint in constant dialogue with her own heart, questioning her feelings, her faith, and her longing. The Examined Heart is the practice of turning compassionate inquiry inward before and during difficult communications. This means regularly asking ourselves: What am I truly feeling beneath my words? What fear or wound is driving this reaction? Am I speaking my authentic need or a defensive posture? What story am I telling myself about my beloved? This bhakti practice of radical self-honesty prevents us from projecting our pain onto others or communicating from unconscious patterns. When we examine our hearts, we take responsibility for our emotional lives and communicate from clarity rather than reactivity. We become capable of naming our actual needs instead of blaming the other person for not meeting needs we haven't articulated. This interior work transforms every conversation: we speak less from ego or victimhood and more from wisdom about what we truly require to feel safe, seen, and loved.
