The Examined Heart Practice

A daily introspective practice of honest self-inquiry into which parts of your lost identity still call to you and which have genuinely released.

Why It Matters

The examined heart is Mirabai's foundational practice: ruthless honesty about what lives in your chest. Rather than accepting your lost identity as simply "gone," this practice asks you to investigate it layer by layer. What specifically do you miss—status, relationships, capabilities, beliefs? Which losses trigger shame, which trigger pure sorrow? Mirabai examined her heart constantly, distinguishing between cultural conditioning she was grateful to shed and genuine capacities she'd developed. This isn't therapy-speak; it's the bhakti tradition's insistence that freedom begins with seeing clearly. By naming what was, without romance or bitterness, you begin to separate your essential self from the roles you've abandoned. The practice involves journaling, meditation, or conversation—any method that lets you ask yourself hard questions. Over time, the examined heart reveals which losses are actually grievances you need to process, and which are simply the necessary deaths that precede rebirth.
