The Examined Heart as Practice

Mirabai's introspective poetry models continuous self-inquiry into motivation, attachment, and authenticity in love.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poems are not declarations but questions, laments, and investigations: Why do I love? What do I truly seek? Where is my loyalty? Her examined heart was her spiritual practice. In Buddhism, sati (mindfulness) requires examining our mental and emotional patterns. Mirabai teaches that the heart must be regularly interrogated—not harshly, but with honest curiosity. What attachments hide beneath our loving? What projections color our relationships? The Brahmaviharas cannot be mechanically practiced; they must emerge from genuine self-understanding. Mirabai's devotional examination shows that inquiry itself is an act of love. In relationships, an examined heart asks: Do I love this person or my fantasy of them? Am I giving freely or seeking validation? Do I practice metta toward my partner's actual self or my idea of who they should be? This ongoing examination keeps love honest and alive.
