The Examined Heart Practice

Mirabai's introspective method of looking directly into the heart's pain to distinguish between ego-wound and soul-longing.

Why It Matters

Mirabai spent hours in solitary devotion, using music and movement to examine the contents of her own heart. This practice—central to her tradition—requires sitting with grief and anger without judgment or distraction, allowing each layer to reveal itself. The examined heart distinguishes between rage born of wounded pride (ego defending itself) and grief born of separation from truth and love (the soul's call). Anger at betrayal may mask grief at abandonment; rage at injustice may conceal despair at powerlessness. By examining the heart with Mirabai's honesty and tenderness, we develop discernment: What am I really angry about? What deeper pain am I protecting? This practice transforms rage from a reactive habit into information—a messenger showing us where we've abandoned ourselves or where we yearn for reunion with the sacred.
