The Examined Heart Practice

A contemplative framework inspired by Mirabai's introspective devotion for regularly investigating motivations in romantic attachment.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's bhakti required constant examination: Am I loving Krishna or my fantasy of Krishna? Am I seeking union or escape? This practice of the examined heart translates directly to attachment work. Before choosing partners, during relationships, and after breakups, we can ask: What am I actually seeking? Is this person's love, or their approval? Am I drawn to their authenticity, or their potential? Do I feel safer with them, or merely less alone? These questions aren't meant to paralyze but to illuminate. Mirabai demonstrated that the examined heart—the willingness to look honestly at our own motivations—is itself a spiritual discipline. By regularly questioning our attachment drives without judgment, we create the possibility of choosing from wisdom rather than wound. This practice reveals whether we're selecting partners from wholeness or from fragmentation, from freedom or from desperation.
