The Examined Heart Practice

A contemplative method of witnessing grief and anger without judgment, drawing on bhakti introspection to uncover the truth beneath reactive emotion.

Why It Matters

The examined heart is central to bhakti tradition—a practice of turning awareness inward to observe emotional patterns with compassion rather than criticism. In grief, anger often masks deeper pain: abandonment, helplessness, or betrayal. Mirabai's devotional poetry demonstrates constant self-inquiry: Why do I rage? What loss am I protecting? By regularly sitting with these questions in meditation or journaling, we develop the capacity to witness anger without being consumed by it. This practice recognizes that rage contains valuable information about our boundaries, values, and unmet needs. The examined heart doesn't deny anger but interrogates it, asking what truth it carries about our freedom and authenticity.
