The Examined Heart Practice

A reflective method for children to witness and understand their grief responses without judgment or analysis, deepening self-knowledge through inquiry.

Why It Matters

The examined heart—a core theme in Mirabai's work—involves looking directly at what moves within us. For grieving children, this is a contemplative practice of gentle self-inquiry rather than analysis. A child might be guided: "Notice where you feel your grief in your body. What shape is it? What color? What does it need?" This isn't therapy or diagnosis; it's the practice of turning inward with curiosity rather than fear. Mirabai used songs and devotion to examine her own longing and confusion. Children might journal, draw, move, or simply sit with a trusted adult and describe their inner landscape. This practice prevents grief from becoming unconscious—a force that controls behavior from shadows. Instead, it becomes something witnessed and known. Regular examined-heart moments help children develop emotional literacy and resilience. They learn that feelings, when observed calmly, are manageable; it's avoidance and denial that create overwhelm.
