The Examined Heart Practice

A contemplative inquiry into the heart's actual condition—its attachments, fears, and desires—as prerequisite for genuine agape, drawn from Mirabai's unflinching self-knowledge.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry never hides from her own longing, jealousy, or desperation; she examines her heart with radical honesty. This practice of examined emotion became her path to liberation. The examined heart is not suppression of feeling but clear seeing: recognizing when love is conditional (demanding reciprocation), when it masks control, when it stems from need rather than abundance. In agape work across traditions, this means regularly asking: Do I love this person as they are, or as I need them to be? Do I give in hope of return? Can I bless their freedom even when it takes them from me? Mirabai teaches that unconditional love emerges only when we've looked unflinchingly at our conditions and chosen to release them. This is not a one-time achievement but a daily practice—meditation, journaling, honest conversation—that keeps the heart aligned with its highest capacity for presence and acceptance.
