The Examined Heart Practice

A contemplative inquiry into motivation, desire, and truth that precedes and informs boundary-setting.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's entire spiritual path was built on relentless self-inquiry: examining her heart's intentions, desires, and attachments with brutal honesty. This examined heart practice asks continuous questions: Why do I stay? What am I afraid to lose? Am I loving or controlling? Do I respect myself in this dynamic? Mirabai didn't establish boundaries from a place of judgment but from deep, loving inquiry into truth. The examined heart requires that we sit with discomfort rather than defend our choices prematurely. In relationships, this means regularly returning to contemplative space to notice what we're tolerating, what we're ignoring, and what our body and spirit are asking us to change. This practice differs from obsessive rumination because it's rooted in compassion rather than blame. We examine ourselves with the same devotional tenderness Mirabai brought to her inquiry. Clear boundaries emerge naturally from a heart that has been thoroughly examined and honestly known. The inquiry itself becomes the boundary work.
