The Examined Heart in Public Loss

Using moments of collective tragedy to investigate what our grief reveals about our values, attachments, and deepest commitments.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's central practice was examining her own heart—tracing desire, attachment, and love back to their source. When public figures die or tragedies strike, collective grief offers an opportunity for this same introspection on a social scale. What aspects of the deceased person do we genuinely mourn? Whose stories move us most, and why? Our grief patterns reveal our values: we may grieve artists more intensely than politicians, or children more than elders, reflecting our unexamined assumptions about worth. By examining collective grief, communities can understand themselves better—their priorities, biases, and what they truly cherish. This practice transforms mourning from passive sadness into active self-knowledge, creating space for more conscious, intentional collective values.
