The Examined Longing

A contemplative inquiry into what we actually fear losing—not the person, but our identity, purpose, or control—revealing the true root of anticipatory grief.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry constantly interrogates desire: what do we truly seek when we cling to another? She distinguished between possessive longing (demanding Krishna stay) and examined longing (seeking truth through devotion). Anticipatory grief often masks deeper fears: loss of identity, purpose, or proof that we mattered. When we examine our longing closely, we may discover we grieve not just the person, but the version of ourselves that existed through them. This practice invites honest questioning: Am I afraid of their absence, or of discovering who I am without them? Does my longing serve their freedom or my comfort? Mirabai's examined heart refused pretty answers. By turning anticipatory grief into disciplined self-inquiry, we separate authentic attachment from dependency, allowing us to grieve what is real while releasing what was never ours to hold.
