The Fluid Self: Becoming and Belonging

The understanding that selfhood is not a fixed entity to defend but an ever-developing capacity to love, which grows through genuine connection.

Why It Matters

Mirabai was constantly transformed by her devotion—her songs evolved, her understanding deepened, her freedom expanded. She was not defending a static self but continuously becoming through her engagement with what she loved most. The Fluid Self challenges the Western notion of a fixed, unchanging core identity that must be protected against others' influence. Instead, it recognizes selfhood as dynamic and relational. You are not diminished by being influenced by those you love; you are completed by the exchange. This doesn't mean having no boundaries or being infinitely malleable to others' demands. Rather, it means distinguishing between influence that serves your growth and manipulation that serves others' needs at your expense. True autonomy, from this perspective, is not independence from influence but the capacity to consciously choose which influences to integrate. In togetherness, The Fluid Self means you don't have to be the same person before and after loving someone. Growth, change, and mutual influence are not threats to autonomy but its fullest expression. You become more fully yourself not in isolation but in authentic relationship with others who call forth your best self.
