Freedom as Fruit of Conscious Love

Mirabai's ultimate freedom emerged not from rejecting love but from choosing it consciously; this teaches that secure attachment liberates rather than constrains.

Why It Matters

A common misconception suggests that freedom and attachment are opposites—that commitment limits us. Mirabai's life demonstrates the opposite: her deepest freedom came through her most intense love. She was freed from family obligation, social constraint, and fear of judgment precisely because she committed totally to her own truth and her love for Krishna. This reveals that the quality of our attachments determines whether they liberate or imprison us. Anxious attachment breeds fear and compulsion; avoidant attachment breeds isolation and regret; secure attachment breeds both intimacy and freedom. When we choose partners consciously—based on genuine compatibility, shared values, and authentic desire rather than fear, obligation, or social pressure—the relationship becomes a container for freedom rather than a cage. We are freed to be ourselves, to grow, to express our gifts. Mirabai chose partnership with Krishna fully, and this choice liberated her from all other constraints. In examining attachment style, ask: does my way of loving make me more free or less? Am I choosing this person, or compelled toward them?
