Freedom Through Devotion Paradox

The counterintuitive wisdom that complete attachment to something larger than ourselves paradoxically liberates us from desperate clinging in romantic relationships.

Why It Matters

One of Mirabai's most liberating teachings is the paradox embedded in her life: the more completely she devoted herself to Krishna, the more free she became. She was not bound by marriage contracts, family expectations, or social status—her devotion to the divine had already answered the fundamental attachment questions. She did not need a husband to complete her because she experienced herself as already beloved by the divine. This paradox directly addresses modern attachment insecurity: the more desperately we seek a partner to complete us, fulfill us, and make us feel safe, the more enslaved we become to that person's moods, approval, and presence. But when our deepest attachment is to something larger—whether understood as God, meaning, our authentic self, or the interconnectedness of all beings—we become paradoxically free to love specific people without desperation. We can love them for who they are rather than what they provide. We can tolerate their imperfection and incompleteness because we are not expecting them to fill the void. Mirabai's example suggests that secure attachment in romance begins with secure attachment to something transcendent. What are you ultimately devoted to? If it's only a romantic partner, you've already lost your freedom.
