Freedom Through Devotion Paradox

The seemingly contradictory truth that total commitment to a relationship can paradoxically liberate rather than constrain.

Why It Matters

Mirabai scandalized her in-laws by leaving her husband's palace to dance publicly for Krishna. Yet she experienced this as freedom, not abandonment. This reveals the paradox central to secure attachment: sometimes full commitment to love—even romantic love—frees us from the anxious monitoring and self-protection that actually imprisons. When we stop hedging our bets, performing smaller versions of ourselves, or strategically withholding to maintain control, we may experience genuine liberation. The paradox challenges both anxious and avoidant patterns. Anxious attachment often involves performing devotion while withheld, hoping the other will finally reciprocate fully. Avoidant attachment involves freedom without devotion, autonomy without intimacy. Mirabai suggests a third path: devotion freely chosen, not to lose oneself but to find oneself more completely. This requires faith—that loving fully won't destroy us, that vulnerability strengthens rather than weakens. The examined heart asks: what freedom am I actually seeking, and might surrender offer it?
