Freedom as Prerequisite for Love

The recognition that authentic Buddhist Brahmaviharas require inner freedom—liberation from compulsion, possession, and false obligation in relationships.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai abandoned social convention and family duty to pursue her devotion to Krishna—a radical act of choosing truth over obligation. Her life illuminates a paradox central to Buddhist relationship wisdom: real love cannot coexist with bondage. In modern relationships, we often confuse obligation with love, staying in situations from guilt or fear rather than genuine care. The Brahmaviharas—metta, karuna, mudita, upekkha—can only flourish where there is freedom to choose. Mirabai's example teaches that honoring your deepest truth is not selfish; it is the ground of authentic relationship. When we release ourselves from false duties and inherited expectations, we become capable of genuine loving-kindness without resentment. This freedom allows us to relate from fullness rather than scarcity, to give from choice rather than compulsion, and to practice equanimity even in separation or loss.
