The Freedom of Radical Authenticity

Mirabai abandoned social position for spiritual truth; this concept examines how releasing false selves enables genuine love-communication and deeper intimacy.

Why It Matters

Mirabai walked away from wealth, status, family expectation, and social role to pursue her devotion. In doing so, she shed the masks that many of us wear—the 'good daughter,' the 'appropriate woman,' the version of self that others approve. This radical stripping away revealed her authentic being underneath, which she then communicated freely. In love relationships, we often carry multiple selves: the self we show partners, the self we show family, the self we think we should be. These layers create barriers to genuine communication. When we can gradually release these false selves—not abandoning all social awareness but simply loosening identification with roles that don't serve truth—we access greater freedom in expressing love. This might mean admitting needs we think we shouldn't have, expressing anger we were taught to suppress, or claiming desires we've hidden. Mirabai's freedom came through this radical authenticity: she was, in her love-songs, simply herself—longing, grieving, joyful, confused, devoted. Partners who can meet each other with similar freedom experience love-communication freed from performance.
