Freedom Through Severance

The liberatory act of cutting ties with systems and identities that compromise integrity, modeled on Mirabai's renunciation of social position for devotional truth.

Why It Matters

Mirabai severed herself from wealth, caste status, marriage, and family approval. Each rupture was painful and scandalous, yet each was an act of freedom. For anticipatory grief about civilization, this framework asks: what must we sever from to see clearly? What systems promise security while demanding complicity? What identities keep us invested in denial? Freedom through severance is not asceticism for its own sake but a precondition for authentic response. We cannot grieve what we are still profiting from, or love what we refuse to see clearly. This might mean severing from certain career paths, consumer habits, or narratives of progress we were raised to defend. Mirabai's example shows that such severances, while socially costly, are spiritually necessary. They create the psychological and moral space where anticipatory grief can become not self-punishment but clarified commitment to what genuinely matters.
