Freedom Through Surrendering Control

Mirabai's surrender to forces beyond her control reveals that children find peace not by controlling grief, but by releasing the illusion of control.

Why It Matters

Mirabai could not make Krishna appear; she could not control her beloved's presence or absence. Her freedom came through surrendering to this fundamental powerlessness and choosing devotion anyway. Grieving children often exhaust themselves trying to control the uncontrollable: replaying events to find what they "should have" done differently, bargaining with God or fate, or becoming hypervigilant to prevent further loss. Supporting a child toward Mirabai's surrender means gently helping them distinguish between what they can and cannot control. A child cannot control death, illness, or loss. They can control how they respond, what they do with their love, how they remember, and who they become. This shift from control to choice is liberating. Rather than asking "Why did this happen?" (a question with no satisfying answer), children can ask "What can I do now? How do I want to honor this person? What matters most to me going forward?" Mirabai's surrender is not passive resignation; it is active choosing within the constraints of reality. When children release the exhausting work of trying to control the uncontrollable, they free enormous energy for actual healing, meaning-making, and moving forward with their lives.
