Freedom Within Commitment

Mirabai's paradoxical model of total commitment to Krishna while rejecting social constraints shows how genuine attachment preserves individual autonomy.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai committed completely to Krishna yet refused the social role prescribed for a widow. She danced publicly, sang ecstatic poetry, and ultimately left her husband's household—all while her devotion intensified. This reveals that authentic attachment doesn't require self-erasure or conformity. Anxious attachment often manifests as merging—losing yourself in another person's identity or needs. Avoidant attachment manifests as independence so fierce it prevents intimacy. Mirabai's freedom-within-commitment suggests a middle way: you can be deeply bonded while remaining authentically yourself. In choosing partners, this framework asks: Does this relationship support my becoming more fully myself, or does it require diminishment? Mirabai never asked Krishna's permission to pursue her path; she assumed she could love fully while honoring her own deepest calling. Partners in secure attachment relationships similarly encourage each other's growth, truth-telling, and individual paths.
