Freedom Within Commitment

Mirabai's devotion was utterly committed yet preserved her spiritual freedom, demonstrating that secure attachment allows both connection and autonomy.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's relationship with Krishna was total commitment without surrender of self—she gave her heart completely while maintaining her inner sovereignty and spiritual quest. This paradox challenges anxious attachment's fear that love requires self-erasure, and avoidant attachment's belief that commitment threatens freedom. Secure attachment integrates both: we can be devoted, vulnerable, and sexually intimate while also maintaining our own values, friendships, creative pursuits, and spiritual life. Mirabai never abandoned her public spiritual practice or her questioning nature for Krishna; instead, these deepened her love. In contemporary relationships, freedom within commitment means trusting that a partner's independent growth strengthens rather than threatens the bond. It means resisting the fantasy that enmeshment equals love, and that distance equals freedom. True secure attachment creates a paradox: we are most free to be ourselves *within* committed love, and most trustworthy when we maintain healthy boundaries and separate identities.
