Freedom Within Devotion

Mirabai's paradoxical freedom through complete surrender to Krishna models how avoidant attachment can transform into secure love through chosen commitment.

Why It Matters

One of bhakti's central paradoxes is that complete devotion—the surrender of ego's defenses—paradoxically creates the deepest freedom. Mirabai poured herself entirely into loving Krishna, yet this surrender made her invulnerable to social shame, family pressure, and conventional expectation. She was simultaneously the most devoted and the most free. This paradox illuminates avoidant attachment: those who maintain emotional distance often believe that freedom requires independence from intimate bonds. Yet Mirabai shows another path—the freedom that comes from chosen, conscious devotion rather than reactive distancing. Secure attachment is not about needing someone but about consciously choosing interdependence. When we examine our avoidance, we may discover it protects us from the vulnerability of real choice. Mirabai's example asks: Can I be free and devoted simultaneously? Can I surrender to love without losing myself?
