The Heart's Yes and No: Discernment Practice

A contemplative method for distinguishing between ego's demands and soul's authentic calling when deciding about commitment and separation.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry repeatedly asks: what does my heart truly want? This isn't selfishness but sacred discernment. The heart's yes is felt differently than ego's yes—it comes with a sense of rightness, wholeness, and inevitability, even when it's difficult. The heart's no has a similar clarity. This practice becomes crucial in autonomy-togetherness decisions: Should I stay in this relationship or leave? Should I compromise or hold firm? Should I open to this community or protect my solitude? The discernment practice involves regular practices—meditation, journaling, somatic awareness—that help you sense the difference between a yes rooted in fear, obligation, or people-pleasing, and a yes rooted in genuine desire and alignment. Similarly, you learn to distinguish between a no rooted in defensiveness and a no rooted in self-respect. Mirabai models this through her decisive actions: she left her marriage-role when her heart said no, and she devoted herself to Krishna when her heart said yes. Neither choice was made lightly or without cost. But both were made from clarity rather than confusion—and that clarity created coherence between her inner life and outer choices.
