The Heart as Witness and Teacher

Training children to listen to their own hearts as sources of wisdom about their grief, following Mirabai's introspective spiritual method.

Why It Matters

In Mirabai's spiritual practice, the heart wasn't merely emotional—it was the seat of wisdom and direct knowing. She trusted her heart's testimony over authority, convention, or doctrine. For grieving children, this concept invites development of heart-literacy: learning to notice, trust, and learn from what their own heart is telling them. Rather than imposing narratives about grief ('you should feel better by now,' 'they're in a better place'), we can teach children to notice their own inner knowing. Practices might include: pausing to check in with what your heart needs right now; noticing what your body tells you about grief; trusting your instincts about whether you want to talk, be quiet, create, or move. Over time, children learn that grief is not uniform or predictable—it has its own wisdom, its own timing, its own teachings. By honoring the heart as both the wound and the witness, children develop self-trust that becomes foundational to their capacity to process loss and integrate it into their growing selves.
