Speaking truth with compassion, refusing the codependent pattern of silence, lies, and people-pleasing to maintain connection.
Mirabai's poetry is radically honest—about longing, doubt, anger, ecstasy, and confusion. She does not soften her truth to make others comfortable. This directness was itself an act of devotion: she respected Krishna's intelligence enough to bring her whole self, including her hardest questions. Codependency demands that we shrink our truth to keep the peace. We stay silent about our needs, lie about our feelings, and apologize for taking up space—all in the name of love. But this is a diminished love, one that doesn't honor the other person's capacity to handle our authenticity. When we practice honest speech, we risk rejection, but we also invite real connection. We give the other person the gift of knowing who we actually are, not who we think they need us to be.
