Hridaya-Sampad: The Examined Heart's Wealth

A contemplative practice of inventorying what we've received from someone still living, building internal wealth that transcends physical presence.

Why It Matters

Hridaya-sampad, the wealth of the examined heart, refers to the spiritual riches accumulated through relationship and presence. Mirabai's teachings emphasize that true wealth is not external but the inner treasures gained through devotion—the softened heart, expanded capacity for love, deepened understanding of ourselves and others. When facing anticipatory grief, hridaya-sampad becomes a deliberate accounting: What has this person taught me? How have they shaped my values? What wisdom, humor, or grace have they given me? This examination serves multiple functions: it shifts focus from impending loss to gifts already received, it strengthens our internal relationship (we internalize their presence), and it prepares us for the truth that while physical presence may end, the gifts they've planted in us continue. Creating a personal inventory—written, artistic, or meditative—of hridaya-sampad honors the relationship's actual impact and builds a foundation of gratitude that can support us through grief.
