Interdependence as Sacred Exchange

Reframing mutual need and vulnerability as spiritual reciprocity rather than burden or transaction.

Mira
Why It Matters

Bhakti is fundamentally relational—the devotee needs the divine, the divine needs the devotee's love. This mutual need is not weakness but the engine of connection. In Love & Disability, interdependence is often framed as loss: the disabled person has become dependent, the partner has become caregiver. This concept inverts that narrative. All love is interdependent. All bodies are vulnerable and need. Disabled people often give what they can: presence, emotional labor, spiritual witness, creativity. Partners give physical assistance. Neither gift is greater; both are essential. Mirabai's tradition recognizes this sacred exchange—the lover needs the beloved, and this need is not shameful but devotional. Reframing interdependence as spiritual reciprocity allows both people to give and receive with dignity.
