Khandana—breaking, shattering—describes what happens when we demolish the false self we've constructed for survival. Mirabai broke caste identity, wifely duty, social respectability. Each break was accompanied by rage: at having been confined, at having complied, at the cost of the mask. Much of the rage underneath grief originates here—we grieve not only what we've lost but who we had to stop being to survive. We rage at years spent performing acceptability. Khandana asks: Which identities no longer serve you? Which are you clinging to out of fear? By deliberately breaking false selves, we access the anger that has been fueling them. This is not reckless destruction but conscious dismantling. Mirabai showed that breaking social forms can be an act of devotion.
