Kshana — The Eternal Now of Presence

Kshana is the Sanskrit term for a moment or instant, but in mystical contexts it points to something transcendent: a moment so full that it contains eternity. Mirabai, in her ecstatic devotion, seeks these moments of complete union with Krishna—where self and other merge, where time stops, where nothing exists but the exchange of love. In Sufi mysticism, these are the moments of fana, annihilation of self in divine union. A single kshana of true connection can recalibrate the entire spiritual trajectory. We know these moments in human love too: a glance across a room, a hand held in silence, a conversation where time disappears and only presence remains. Yet we often treat kshana as exceptions to ordinary life, losing them to memory and regret. The examined heart asks: Can we access the quality of kshana while living in sequential time? Can we practice presence so that more of life becomes that eternal moment? Kshana teaches that timelessness is not only found in transcendence but can be cultivated in attention, in genuine meeting, in the surrender that comes from truly being with another.
