The Language of Longing: Speaking What We Need

A framework for articulating deep needs and desires in love through the poetic, embodied language of longing rather than demands or complaints.

Why It Matters

Mirabai doesn't demand that Krishna return—she sings of her longing, making her need visible and beautiful. This language of longing is different from complaint or ultimatum. It says: this is what my heart needs, and I speak it from a place of vulnerability rather than control. In intimate communication, we often flip between aggressive demands and silent suffering. Mirabai offers a third way: the honest expression of longing. Instead of 'you never listen to me' (blame), the language of longing says: 'I long to be truly heard by you; I hunger for that understanding.' This reframes need as human and beautiful rather than as weapon or weakness. Speaking longings requires vulnerability—we admit we need, we are not self-sufficient, we want something from another person. Yet this honesty invites reciprocal honesty. When we speak our longings poetically, from the examined heart, we invite our beloved to meet us there. Longing becomes the music that draws two people closer.
