Lila—The Play Within Tragedy

Lila (divine play) is a Hindu concept suggesting that even tragedy unfolds within a larger cosmic story; collective mourning can hold both grief and mystery.

Why It Matters

In Hindu philosophy, lila refers to the divine play through which the cosmos unfolds—the idea that even difficult events are part of a larger, incomprehensible pattern. While Bhakti focuses more on emotional devotion than cosmic philosophy, Mirabai lived in a worldview where surrender and trust coexisted with deep suffering. For collective mourning, lila offers a paradoxical framework: we can fully grieve what feels senseless and simultaneously hold that our understanding is partial. This is not about finding 'silver linings' or premature meaning-making, but about cultivating the capacity to hold both the tragedy's realness and the mystery of existence. Some losses shatter our sense of order and justice. Lila teaches that we can protest this destruction while also acknowledging we may never fully understand the larger fabric in which our loss is woven. This holding of both grief and mystery can be profoundly liberating, preventing us from being trapped in either despair or forced positivity.
