The cultivation of intense desire for the divine (or what we love most) as itself a path of transformation and meaning-making.
In bhakti tradition, longing for God is not a problem to be solved but a sacred state to be deepened. Mirabai's famous verses dwell in separation from Krishna—she celebrates the ache of distance, the sleeplessness of desire, the way unfulfilled love keeps the heart alive and awake. This reframes grief: rather than viewing loss as damage to be repaired, we can honor longing as its own valid state. When we lose someone, that longing—however painful—connects us to them and to dimensions of ourselves we might otherwise neglect. Mirabai teaches that the intensity of devotion lives in the space between lover and beloved. Applied to grief and creativity, this means: don't rush to fill the absence. Instead, allow yourself to fully feel the longing. Write in it. Create from it. The ache itself becomes material for art, music, poetry, or spiritual insight. Longing keeps us tender, awake, and connected to what matters most.
