Using unfulfilled desire and yearning as wisdom teachers about what we truly value and what we need.
Mirabai's entire spiritual path was animated by longing—for union with Krishna that could never be fully realized in the material world. Yet she did not resent this unfulfilled longing; she honored it as the deepest teacher. Longing shows us what matters. It reveals our authentic values beneath social conditioning. In relational boundaries, longing becomes diagnostic: What am I longing for that this relationship cannot provide? What am I tolerating in hopes of accessing something I truly need? When we examine our longing without judgment, it illuminates whether we are settling, whether we are waiting for change that may never come, whether we are asking the wrong questions. Mirabai's longing for Krishna was eternal and sacred precisely because it could not be resolved—it kept her spiritually awake. But longing in human relationships sometimes requires us to grieve what cannot be and to seek it elsewhere. Honoring longing as teacher means asking: Is this longing teaching me about myself? About what I deserve? About whether to stay or go?
