Mirabai's devotional practice teaches that true love requires wisdom (prajna) to discern when holding serves the beloved and when releasing becomes the greater act of care.
Mirabai's relationship to Krishna was one of devotion that ultimately transcended personal possession—she loved not to own but to serve the divine. This devotional love requires discrimination: understanding that attachment can masquerade as care, and that sometimes the most loving act is releasing another person to their own path. In Buddhist Brahmaviharas, this wisdom applies to all four qualities. Loving-kindness includes knowing when firmness or distance is kinder than accommodation. Compassion requires recognizing that fixing someone's pain may prevent their growth. Sympathetic joy means celebrating when someone leaves, grows away, or chooses differently. Equanimity recognizes that we cannot control outcomes or possession. Mirabai's example teaches that mature love is neither clinging nor indifferent, but discerning—present with full heart, yet holding relationships with an open hand.
