Love as the Reason for Unbecoming

In Mirabai's path, the loss of former identity wasn't punishment or accident—it was the inevitable consequence of loving something more than your own continuity.

Why It Matters

Mirabai lost her identity because she loved Krishna more than she loved safety, status, or being understood. This concept reframes identity loss from something that happens to you into something you risk for love. That love might be love of truth, of authenticity, of a calling, of another person, or of the divine. But the principle is the same: when you love something more fiercely than you love your established self, that self must change or shatter. This doesn't make grief invalid—Mirabai also grieved. But it offers context: your lost identity may be a casualty of your own deepest commitment. This perspective doesn't erase the pain, but it gives it meaning. It asks: What did I love enough to lose myself for? And if the answer brings no meaning, that too is important to grieve.
