Love Without Possession: Liberating Attachment

Mirabai's devotion taught love that required nothing—not presence, reciprocation, or control; this principle helps children release grief rooted in possessive attachment.

Why It Matters

A paradox in Mirabai's teaching is that her greatest longing coexisted with a profound non-attachment: she loved Krishna completely while holding him with open hands, asking nothing in return, expecting no reciprocation. This is love purified of ego-driven need—love as gift rather than transaction. For grieving children, this framework offers liberation from certain dimensions of grief rooted in possessiveness or control. Some grief contains elements of "I need you to come back," "You abandoned me," or "Life is unfair because I couldn't keep you." These attachments intensify suffering. Mirabai's model suggests that authentic love contains within it the capacity to release—to say "I loved you completely AND I release you; I honor what we had AND I let you go; I miss you AND I want your peace more than my comfort." This doesn't diminish the reality of loss but transforms the emotional stance around it. Practices might include: writing letters releasing the deceased, meditation on impermanence, rituals of letting go, affirmations of unconditional love. For children, this means gently helping them distinguish between loving someone and needing to keep them, between honoring a relationship and controlling its form. This liberation from possessive attachment doesn't mean loving less but loving more freely—a maturation that actually strengthens children's capacity for healthy relationships going forward and deepens their peace with loss.
