A framework for understanding how the beloved reflects both our highest aspirations and our deepest wounds, making them simultaneously true and false.
In idealization, we often project our own unlived potential onto another person. They become a mirror reflecting what we could be, or a flame that consumes our lesser self. Mirabai understood that Krishna is both real (historically and spiritually) and internally present (as her own deepest aspiration and divine spark). The Mirror and the Flame framework helps us navigate Courtly Love & Idealization by acknowledging that when we idealize someone, we are simultaneously seeing something true about them AND something true about ourselves. The person is real, but the meaning we attribute to them is partially our own creation. This doesn't make the love false—it makes it complex. By recognizing both mirror and flame, we can honor what draws us to this person while taking responsibility for what we've projected. We can love them for who they are rather than who we need them to be, and simultaneously reclaim the qualities we've externalized as available within ourselves.
