Moh: The Examined Attachment

Conscious inquiry into our attachments and illusions about civilization's permanence, distinguishing binding delusion from sustaining love.

Why It Matters

In Sanskrit, moh means delusion or illusion—but Mirabai's approach was never to reject attachment itself. Instead, she examined it ruthlessly. Which attachments bind us to false comfort? Which attachments to civilization's continuity prevent us from seeing clearly? The examined attachment asks: do we cling to the story of perpetual progress out of genuine love for human flourishing, or out of fear? Mirabai's devotion survived the dissolution of her outer world precisely because she had examined what she truly loved versus what she assumed she should love. For anticipatory grief, this practice means distinguishing between healthy grief (acknowledging genuine loss) and moh (clinging to illusions that prevent adaptation). The examined heart can grieve authentically.
