Nishkama: Loving Without Needing Return

The practice of loving without expectation of reciprocation or outcome—which paradoxically enables healthier boundaries by freeing you from the need to control your partner's response.

Why It Matters

Nishkama karma means action without attachment to results. In bhakti, it describes loving the divine without demand for acknowledgment or reward. Mirabai loved Krishna knowing he would never be hers in conventional terms, yet this unreturned love made her free. Applied to human relationships, nishkama reframes boundaries: you can love someone fully while accepting they may not change, may not meet your needs, may not choose you. This is liberating. Many people resist boundaries because they believe love must eventually convert the beloved, compel reciprocation, guarantee happiness. Nishkama teaches that love and boundaries are compatible. You can care deeply for someone while firmly requiring that they respect your limits. You can wish for their growth while accepting you cannot force it. This detachment from outcome is not coldness—it is the deepest form of respect. It means loving the person as they are rather than as you need them to be.
