Niskama Bhakti: Desire Without Attachment

The paradox of wanting without clinging, loving without strings—the ultimate freedom within attraction.

Why It Matters

Niskama bhakti means devotion without seeking reward, loving without expecting return. Mirabai's radical gesture was desiring Krishna while releasing outcomes—whether he came to her, acknowledged her, or remained eternally distant. This isn't indifference; it's love purified of transaction. Applied to attraction, niskama bhakti dissolves the scorekeeping dynamic: I opened my heart, so you owe me reciprocal vulnerability. I was faithful, so you must be. The pain of unequal attraction often stems from attachment to a specific response; niskama bhakti invites us to examine whether we can love someone's reality rather than our vision of them, whether we can release the demand that they feel as we do. This doesn't mean tolerating harm or abandoning boundaries. Rather, it means distinguishing between healthy standards and desperate grasping, between choosing to stay and clinging from fear. Niskama bhakti is freedom within love.
