Freedom Through Non-Attachment to Outcome

Mirabai's radical freedom—defying convention, caste, family—rooted in her non-attachment to social reward, applied to civilizational action without guarantee of success.

Why It Matters

Mirabai left her husband, rejected her caste, refused to perform expected duties, and embraced public devotion when all were forbidden to her. Her freedom was not rebellious abandon but spiritual clarity: she was not attached to approval, safety, or outcome. She served the divine regardless of consequence. This non-attachment to outcome is crucial for anticipatory grief: if we act only to prevent collapse, we will despair. If we grieve only to restore, we will break. Mirabai's model offers liberation: do what is true and necessary because it is true and necessary, not because you can guarantee the result. Plant seeds in soil you may never harvest. Tend the commons knowing you may not see restoration. Speak truth knowing it may not change power. This freedom through non-attachment transforms grief from a demand for control into purposeful participation, whatever comes.
