The Paradox of Presence and Absence

Mirabai's spiritual technology for holding simultaneous truths: the beloved is gone and eternally present, grief is real and so is joy.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's theology holds that Krishna is simultaneously absent (she grieves the separation) and eternally present (she experiences his presence in devotion). This paradox is not resolved but inhabited. On anniversary dates, this concept acknowledges that grief anniversaries trigger the collision of two truths: the person is gone (absence) and their presence in memory, influence, and love is real (presence). Most grief frameworks ask you to choose one—either accept absence and move forward, or maintain presence and remain stuck. Mirabai shows a third way: hold both truths simultaneously without needing to resolve them. On triggering dates, practice sitting in the paradox rather than escaping it. Acknowledge: 'You are not here, and you are still with me. I am mourning your absence while celebrating your continuing presence in who I am becoming.' This maturity of grief honors the complexity of love that doesn't end simply because the body does.
