Prema as Love Beyond Hierarchy

The Sanskrit term for divine love that dissolves social rank and expectation, teaching that Agape ignores status, caste, and institutional power.

Why It Matters

Prema is the highest form of love in bhakti philosophy—love that exists purely for its own sake, not for duty, obligation, or social role. Mirabai embodied this radically: a queen who abandoned palace for a life of devotion, loving across caste and gender boundaries that her society violently defended. Prema dissolves hierarchy because it recognizes the divine in all beings equally. In contrast to vatsalya (parental love) or sakhya (friendship love), prema transcends the relational structure itself. For unconditional love across traditions, prema teaches that Agape cannot coexist with domination. If I love you conditionally based on your status, wealth, or usefulness, I am not practicing Agape—I am performing social contract. Prema demands we love the despised, the marginalized, the enemy, not because they deserve it by social measure, but because love itself is the measure. This directly challenges every hierarchy built on worthiness.
