Prema: Love Beyond Attachment

Prema, in Mirabai's bhakti tradition, represents love stripped of ego and personal need—a love that flows toward the divine and, by extension, toward all beings. Unlike romantic attachment that seeks reciprocation or possession, prema is unconditional surrender. For celibacy without loneliness, prema reframes intimate connection as spiritual communion rather than physical union. Mirabai's devotion to Krishna exemplified this: her love was complete, all-consuming, yet entirely non-possessive. This concept teaches that the deepest human intimacy emerges not from sexual bonding but from shared spiritual yearning. When celibacy is grounded in prema rather than rejection or fear, it becomes generative rather than diminishing—a love so vast it includes all beings without needing to claim any one person exclusively.
