The bhakti virtue of genuine happiness in another's flourishing, extended to celebrate the person you're becoming while honoring your former self.
Prema mudita is sympathetic joy—the ability to feel genuine happiness in another's happiness, free of envy or loss. It's one of the highest bhakti virtues. Mirabai could have remained bitter about her lost palace life, her lost marriage, her lost respectability. Instead, she cultivated joy in her freedom, in her devotion, in her authentic path. Prema mudita applied to grief asks: can you feel genuine happiness for who you're becoming, even while mourning who you were? This isn't pretending the grief isn't real. It's holding both truths simultaneously. Your former self served you then. Your emerging self serves you now. Prema mudita lets you honor the past without being imprisoned by it. You can say: I loved her, and I'm glad she's gone, and I'm joyful for who I'm becoming.
