Prema-mukti is liberation through love; in Mirabai's vision, freedom comes not by ceasing to love but by loving truthfully, wisely, and without illusion or possession.
One of Mirabai's most radical teachings is that freedom and love are not opposed. She did not escape her longing for Krishna; she deepened it until it became a form of mukti—liberation. Prema-mukti—liberation through love—suggests that after betrayal, you need not harden your heart or deny your capacity to love. Instead, you learn to love differently: more truly, more wisely, with fewer illusions. This means loving without needing the other person to validate you, loving while holding them accountable, loving while recognizing their humanity and their capacity to cause harm. It means moving from possessive love—love that demands reciprocation and ownership—to a love that honors the other's freedom and your own. After betrayal, many people either shut down or repeat the pattern. Mirabai's path is a third way: to remain open-hearted while becoming discerning, to keep loving while learning to love more honestly. This is the paradox that transforms grief into wisdom and betrayal into a teacher.
