Prema as Civilizational Witness

Prema—divine love—becomes an act of civilizational witnessing. Mirabai loved Krishna knowing loss was inevitable; she sang through abandonment and grief without turning away. For anticipatory grief, prema asks: can we love our civilization, its beauty and fragility, without numbing ourselves or succumbing to despair? This is not passive acceptance but active presence. We witness what we cherish—its art, its struggles, its reaching—fully aware it may transform or fade. Mirabai's bhakti teaches that grief and love are inseparable; the depth of one measures the depth of the other. In civilizational terms, prema-as-witness means staying emotionally present to what matters most, refusing both cynicism and false hope, and letting that presence itself become a form of resistance and meaning-making.
